Old coal chute covers. The first 2 I saw in Cold Spring NY this weekend. Not to be confused with manhole covers which are far larger and heavier. These coal chutes that were situated in front or just to the side of a front door over the basement were for deliveries of coal for heating homes. Many hade thick glass round insets to provide additional light to the basement. Over time many of these glass inserts turned purple. That’s because of the manganese that was used in the manufacturing of glass at the time.

A brown velvet hat that belonged to a “street” dentist or traveling teeth puller in London around 1820-1850. It is decorated with 88 decaying human teeth from former patients. Each one attached with twine.
In the days before anesthetic, this cap was meant to reassure potential clients that dentist had skills and could magically remove your rotten teeth without pain or infection.
