Happy Father’s Day to all from a grateful American Father! This picture was taken at my concert in Granbury, TX on Flag Day last Friday; the flag is the first ”Stars and Stripes” American flag of the 13 colonies. Here’s to the Founding Fathers!

I wish everyone an inspiring and prayerful Memorial Day. My family has a long history of military service, dating back to Col. A.G. Murphey, who fought in the American Revolution. The veteran I knew best was my grandfather, Pinkney Lavary Murphey, Chief Quartermaster of the U.S. Navy during World War II, present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Known as "Spud", my he joined the Navy at 16, serving with Admiral Nimitz on the battleship Arizona during WWI. He became the Lightweight Boxing Champion of the Pacific Fleet. He briefly lived in Dallas and married my grandmother, Myrtle Degan, but re-enlisted at Admiral Nimitz's request as WWII loomed, serving past retirement age. I called him “Grandaddy Spud.” He learned to play the mandolin and ukulele. He was a fun-loving, rough-and-tumble Irish sailor. He gave me a ukulele when I was 6 and a Martin D-28 guitar when I was 16. This guitar has a special place in my heart; I wrote many songs with that guitar, including “Wildfire,” “Geronimo’s Cadillac,” “Carolina in the Pines,” and others. On my album “Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir,” I included “Honolulu” in memory of my grandfather. It captures his joy in living in Hawaii and the sorrow of burying his Seabee buddies. The song was also on “AUSTINOLOGY: Alleys of Austin,” recorded with my son, Ryan, who never knew his great-grandfather but channels his musical spirit. It features Mickey Raphael, harmonica player for Willie Nelson. Mickey and Ryan both knew my father, P.L. Murphey Jr., who carried Grandaddy Spud's spirit when he played the ukulele with me and my brother, Mark. Here’s to the soldiers who bravely led the charge against the Evil Empire. Link in my bio for the "Honolulu" song.
