A really BIG thank you to FSJP volunteers Dennis, Maureen, Astrid, Umar and Garden Club of Toronto (GCT) volunteers Kevin, Laurie, Derryn, Sherry, Sue, Deborah, and Ruth all led by garden planner and organizer extraordinaire Michael! Thanks to these volunteers the west oval garden bed has been replanted with 350+ plants, which will bloom through spring, summer and autumn. We, in the neighbourhood, are fortunate to have a community that cares for our precious garden in St. James Park. @gardencluboftoronto The Garden Club of Toronto

On behalf of all the early birds who participated in our 3-week spring migration bird meet-up, I wanted to chirp a thank you to our fantastic bird tour guide Justin Peter @birder_justin ! 🦜 Your ability to identify birds by their calls was nothing short of magical—like you had a direct line to our feathered friends. We learned so much! Please google Word Quest Nature Tours and chekc out their webinars and travel adventures. Happy Birding everyone!

DYK? Many spring migrant birds have spent the winter in the tropical climes of Central and South America, taking their cues to return north to breed from increasing daylight length in spring. This male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is one of these long-distance migrants that will stop to feed in St. James Park on their way north from the Tropics. After just a few months on their breeding grounds, they will embark on their return southbound journey for the winter months. The Rose-breasted Grosbeak sometimes makes an appearance during our spring migration meet-ups, and we’ll be watching for his beautiful triangular rose “bib” in the treetops. He may betray his presence first by his sweet caroling song. Join us for our third and final meet-up tomorrow, Tues May 14th at 7 AM, meet at the pavilion (photo credits: Justin Peter). Spring is here! Toronto Parks is in the park today, sprucing it up for us! Thank you @torontopfr ! Triming the non-blooming wisteria on the arch, edging some garden beds, clipping the Russian Sage down to its roots and maintaining the fountain. Yay!

Another beautiful morning identifying the migrating birds resting and feeding in St. James Park. Today's birds mostly stayed in the top tree-tops which is why it is most helpful to have an expert bird guide like Justin Peter who can identify the birds by their songs. Amazing, really! Today we saw: White Throated Sparrow, Black Throated Blue Warbler, Northern Water Thrush, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Black and White Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Grey Cat Bird, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, American Gold Fink, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Least Flycatcher and the Baltimore Oriole! We have one more week of bird watching --- Join us next Tuesday May 14th at 7 AM at the Pavilion. @birder_justin Birds Canada 🐦🐦‍⬛
