Proud of the Canada we are. Acknowledging of the Canada we were. Hopeful for the Canada we are becoming. Canada Day elicits many feelings, opinions and viewpoints. Let’s be honest and real, Canada has a complex history. On one hand, we are so proud to be Canadian. To live in a safe and welcoming place for all peoples. A nation full of potential that is charging forward into the future. While on the other, we are acutely aware that Canada has amends to make. We acknowledge that this is a challenging and even sorrowing day for Indigenous peoples. Is it possible to both acknowledge our flawed history and be proud at the same time? Yes, we can be proud of some aspects while also recognizing there is much work for us to do for reconciliation to move forward. Acknowledgement of our history and our failures as a nation does not diminish what we have done right. There is place for both of these truths. Together, they can be a reason to push to right the wrongs of our past. So on this Canada Day we’re proud because there is good here, and good that has been done. We’re also acknowledging that our best Canada is one that goes into the future on the right foot, making amends for our past transgressions and righting wrongs long overdue.
