How can blind people keep their vote private in an election?   The McGonagle Reader enables blind or visually impaired people to vote in secret.   They can be used with headphones, and could help people who have previously relied on being assisted by a companion or a polling staff member to read or mark their vote.   If you haven’t asked for one of these readers ahead of the election, your polling station may not have one.   Tap the link in @BBCNewsUK ’s bio to read more from people who are going to be able to vote in private for the first time.   #Blind #Accessibility #GeneralElection #BBCNews

“The most important thing is that we are still alive." Hurricane Beryl has brought devastation and destruction to Union Island, which lies off St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean. "Ninety percent of the island – easily 90% – has been erased," fisherman and resident Sebastien Sailly said. He also said people have been trying to gather supplies to make temporary accommodation for their families. Do you really not do politics? You’re not alone.    Based on recent election turnout, up to a third of Brits may not use their vote in the UK general election on 4 July. Trust in government and politicians is “as low now as it has ever been over the last 50 years”, according to the British Social Attitudes survey.   MPs shouting in parliament, committee hearings, green papers, white papers – it can all feel very distant from daily life. But politics is also there when you sigh over the cost of a cuppa, put off paying a bill, celebrate a new job, move home or just wonder about the future.   Tap the link in @BBCNews ’s bio for more on how politics plays a part in your daily life.   #GeneralElection #BBCNews

"Since I started cycling I was never dreaming to be part of the Tour de France but now I can't believe it.” Biniam Girmay has made history as the first black African to win a Tour de France stage, as Mark Cavendish - who had been tipped for a record 35th stage win - was held up by a late crash on the run into Turin. In a reduced sprint finish, Eritrea's Girmay powered to victory, with Colombia's Fernando Gaviria and Belgium's Arnaud de Lie in second and third. At the finish an emotional Girmay, 24 - who won his first Grand Tour stage at the Giro d'Italia in 2022 - outlined the importance of his achievement, thanking “my family, my wife, Eritrea and Africa.” Tap the link in @bbcnews ’s bio to read more about the race. “Going to the army will make a frum - religious Jew - not religious anymore.” Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men and boys took to the streets of Mea Shearim - the heart ultra-Orthodox community - in Jerusalem for an angry protest against a new ruling which rules they must be conscripted into the Israeli military. There have been several demonstrations since the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that young Haredi or ultra-Orthodox men must be conscripted and are no longer eligible for significant government benefits. Young men who are full-time students in Jewish seminaries, or yeshivas, told the BBC that their religious lifestyle is in jeopardy. There has been controversy over the role of the ultra-Orthodox in Israeli society for decades. From a small minority, the community is now a million-strong, making up 12.9% of the population. Ultra-Orthodox parties have often had huge influence in Israeli politics, giving support to successive governments headed by Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in return for continuing the draft exemption and hundreds of millions of dollars for their institutions. This has been a long-standing cause of friction with secular Jewish Israelis who mostly do compulsory military service and pay the largest share of taxes. Tap the link on @bbcnews ’s bio to read more about the changes to the draft rules. (📷 EPA) #Israel #Jerusalem #BBCNews
