👸 Personification of Ktisis, #MosaicMonday 📚 Fragment of a Floor Mosaic with a Personification of Ktisis, Byzantine, 500–550, with modern restoration, Marble and glass, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York - @metmuseum ➡️ The bejeweled woman, holding the measuring tool for the Roman foot, is identified by the restored Greek inscription as Ktisis, a figure personifying the act of generous donation or foundation. ➡️ The man with a cornucopia, originally one of a pair flanking her, has the Greek inscription “good” by his head, half of a text that probably said, “good wishes.” The fragment, made of marble and glass tesserae (small pieces of colored material), is typical of the exceptional mosaics created throughout the Byzantine world in the 500s. ➡️ The Metropolitan Museum, after acquiring the two figures independently, has restored them in accordance with a dealer’s photograph showing their original arrangement while in storage before separation. ✍🏻 @metmuseum 📍 #DailyMuseum 🔗 #art #artist #artwork #metmuseum #mosaic #byzantine #byzantium #museum #antiquity #antic @metgreekandroman

⛪️ Saturday in Belgrade (Serbia), Church of Saint Sava The Church of Saint Sava is a Serbian Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an important figure in medieval Serbia. It is built on the presumed location of St. Sava’s grave. It is the largest Orthodox church in Serbia, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches and it ranks among the largest churches in the world. It is the most recognisable building in Belgrade and a landmark, as its dominating dome resembles that of the Hagia Sophia, after which it had been modelled. The church contains a rigorous symmetrical layout with a great sensitivity to light due to its large dome and four apses. Its interior cladding with 12,000 m2 (130,000 sq ft) of gold mosaics is almost complete. 📍 #DailyMuseum 🔗 #art #artist #artwork #serbia #belgrade #architecture #orthodox #instarchitecture #instaarchitecture #serbian @hramsvetogsave.rs

☀️ Thursday in Sirmium (Serbia), Roman capital Sirmium was a city in the Roman province of Pannonia, located on the Sava river, on the site of modern Sremska Mitrovica in the Vojvodina autonomous province of Serbia. First mentioned in the 4th century BC and originally inhabited by Illyrians and Celts, it was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC and subsequently became the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia Inferior. In 294 AD, Sirmium was proclaimed one of four capitals of the Roman Empire. It was also the capital of the Praetorian prefecture of Illyricum and of Pannonia Secunda. Sirmium purportedly had 100,000 inhabitants and was one of the largest cities of its time. The site is protected as an archaeological Site of Exceptional Importance. The modern region of Syrmia (Srem or Srijem) was named after the city. 📍 #DailyMuseum 🔗 #art #artist #artwork #serbia #belgrade #sirmium #archaeologia #archeology #antiquity #antic #arteromana

☀️ Tuesday in Viminacium (Serbia), Roman capital Viminacium was a major city, military camp, and the capital of the Roman province of Moesia (modern-day Serbia). Following the division of Moesia in 87, following Domitian’s Dacian War, it became the capital of Moesia Superior. As of 2018, only 3-4% of the site has been explored. The city dates back to the 1st century AD, and at its peak it is believed to have had 40,000 inhabitants, making it one of the biggest cities in the Balkans of that time. It lies on the Roman road Via Militaris. Viminacium was devastated by Huns in the 5th century, but was later rebuilt by Justinian. It was completely destroyed with the arrival of Slavs in the 6th century. ✍🏻 @wikipedia 📍 #DailyMuseum 🔗 #art #artist #artwork #serbia #belgrade #viminacium #archaeologia #archeology #antiquity #antic #arteromana @viminaciumlumenmeum

🏺 Terracotta antefix ➡️ Antefixes are decorative covers for the ends of tiles situated at the edge of a roof. This example, showing Venus (Aphrodite, the goddess of love) and her lover Mars (Ares, the god of war), retains a considerable amount of its painted surface - @metmuseum 📚 Terracotta antefix, Early Imperial, Augustan - late 1st century BCE–early 1st century CE, Terracotta, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York - @metmuseum 📍 #DailyMuseum 🔗 #art #artist #artwork #metmuseum #terracotta #museum #antiquity #antic #arteromana @metgreekandroman

🦁 #LionArt 🎨 Edmé Saint-Marcel (1819-1890), Lion’s Head and Sketch of a Lion, Circa 1860-1870, Charcoal and graphite, The Art Institute of Chicago - @artinstitutechi ➡️ The resting head of this sizable lion and the inset detail of his full body suggest that the artist was sketching from life. The rich textures of the chalk highlights and the overall detail reveal that the sleeping pose was no accident, and that the drawing was in fact made in the only moment the animal remained still enough to be captured on paper. ✍🏻 @artinstitutechi 📍 #DailyMuseum 🔗 #art #artist #artwork #lion #drawing #drawings
