Liuyi Huang and Huiyan Zhang both received the East London Printmakers Award 2024; and Ulla Neureiter received the ELP Graduate Marketing Award. Our Japanese Woodblock course returns on 10 July. Run by our wonderful tutor @soominleong_art and suitable for complete beginners or as a refresher, you will practice the basics of making and carving blocks, including kento registration marks, how to ink using watercolours and brushes and hand-printing with a baren. This approach to print making has a long and rich tradition and uses non-toxic and sustainable materials. Dulwich Picture Gallery's current exhibition - Yoshida: Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking - is an excellent place to find out more about the astonishing potential of this process in the hands of master practitioners. Drypoint is a form of intaglio print where lines and other marks are drawn into a plate of card, soft metal or thin plastic; Carborundum is an inorganic compound used as an abrasive which can be mixed with glue to create a paste that can be painted onto the plate and, when dry, can be inked and printed to produce a range of tonal values.
