“I believe in the spiritual and magical power of the work of art”. (Ugo Rondinone) ✨ Defined as a visionary trapped in reality, Ugo Rondinone is one of the most important figures in the international contemporary art scene. In 2023, a volume was published on the occasion of the exhibition “When the Sun Goes Down and the Moon Comes Up” at the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva. It is a collection of colour photographs that capture the museum’s halls and the exhibited works (both Rondinone’s and those belonging to the MAH Collection). @mahgeneve #ugorondinone #fivecontinentseditions

An alternative vision of African history. As a self-taught photographer, Omar Victor Diop (Dakar, 1980) attempts to undermine prejudices and stereotyped visions by shedding light on the characters neglected by Western narratives. In October 2021 Five continents Editions published his first monograph in co-edition with the Parisian gallery “Magnin-a”. The volume is enriched by the preface by Renée Mussai, curator and art historian. This is accompanied by the critical essay by Imani Perry, professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, and the interview with the artist conducted by the poet Marvin Adoul. @omar_viktor @galerie_magnin_a #omarvictordiop #galeriemagnina #fivecontinentseditions #photography #artphotography

(Antonella Anedda) * “While watching her grandmother mend sheets, Maria amused herself by inventing stories inspired by the threads that repaired the rip and created a mysterious alphabet in her eyes”. * ☀️ It is on the first day of #summer that we want you to rediscover “Tenendo per mano il sole”, a book that accompanied the exhibition of the same name at the MAXXI in Rome in 2019-2020, both dedicated to one of the most significant voices in the history of contemporary Italian art: Maria Lai. È tornata in Sardegna (…) (Antonella Anedda) * “Maria Lai created her first sewn fable “Tenendo per mano il sole” (1984–2004) in 1984, using fabric, thread, and canvas. The artist had completed a demanding apprenticeship in Venice with the sculptor Arturo Martini, during which she produced drawings and sculptures, taking part in group exhibitions that she detested, just as she detested the artist-character stereotype and society events. She returned to Sardinia, (…) her return (…) was due to her discovery of a possibility she described as “starting to play again.” (…) For Lai, starting to play again meant fi nding herself again, no longer caring about criticism, clichés, or gossip. She became what she truly was: one of the most important contemporary artist”. “We took full advantage of New York’s stimulating energy, life was organized in a natural way, we conveyed our ideas through painting, we wanted to give meaning, what mattered most was having a vision”. “The subject in my paintings is, in effect, the research of simplicity. The working away of all excess material to the minimum of an image and there, in the drawing, to find the subject complete. The image intact. The balance from which comes life and motion, the silence unimpeded” (Samantha McEwen, New York, 1984) @modestiperdriollegallery presents a group of works from the 1980s to the present day by Samantha McEwen, an Anglo-American artist born in London in 1960. On this occasion, the first monograph dedicated to the life and work of Samantha McEwen, published by @fivecontinentseditions , has been launched.
