For his most recent exhibition ‘Studiosis‘, Michael Williams explores painting as an act of embodiment by interrogating its formal structures – color, composition, form, texture, and stroke. The physicality of the artist’s hand is captured in each layer, substantiating the significance of paint as a slow medium. Williams‘ new paintings and drawings are on view through August 2, 2024 at 515 West 24th Street. #MichaelWilliams #Studiosis #Gladstone

NOW OPEN / Organized by Alissa Bennett, ‘The Secret History’, is a group exhibition titled after Donna Tartt’s beloved mystery told in reverse. “I suppose in many ways, I think ‘The Secret History‘ is a book that ponders why we so often fail to calculate that the world doesn’t always change in the ways we think it does; it’s not just us who are dissatisfied, people have always looked for ways to escape.“ — #AlissaBennett Featuring artists: Chino Amobi, Hope Atherton, Matthew Barney, Nicholas Bierk, Matt Hilvers, David Jones, Karyn Lyons, Ruby McCollister, Michele O’Marah, Jonesy and Tim Jackson, Kayode Ojo, Shigeo Otake, Micki Pellerano, Adam Putnam, Rachel Rose, Arisa Yoshioka, and Marissa Zappas. ‘The Secret History‘ is currently on view until August 2, 2024 at 130 East 64th Street. Matthew Barney: SECONDARY is on view until September 8, 2024 at The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris. 🔗 Learn more at the link in our bio. @FLAGArtFoundation ‘s group exhibition ‘The Swimmer‘ is inspired by John Cheever's 1969 short story of the same name. The show includes Jim Hodges’ “If There Had Been a Pool it Would Have Reflected Us,“ a tan and turquoise blanket that resembles an imaginary landscape. Hodges‘ work often blurs the lines of an object‘s intended function and meaning. Navigating themes inherent in ‘The Swimmer‘ and Cheever’s broader oeuvre, including alcoholism, grandiosity, loss of innocence, selective memory, privilege, sexuality, etc., the exhibition trains an eye to the crumbling of an American dream, set against the glittering backdrop of a string of swimming pools. On view through August 9, 2024. Photo: Steven Probert #JimHodges #TheSwimmer #FLAGArtFoundation

#OnView / Carrie Mae Weems: Remember to Dream examines the evolution of her creative, politically engaged practice over the past 30 years, tracing significant moments of racial reckoning in the United States through the artist’s own lens. @CCSBard highlights an array of works from large-scale installations to serial bodies of photography, and foregrounds lesser-known works that draw in the context of Weems’ lived experiences and commitment to activism. Through investigations of history, identity, and power, Weems‘ work sheds light on the connections between personal experience and the structures and institutions that shape people’s lives.
