T! It’s been 5 days..I’ve been looking at hundreds of photos of you & rereading years of texts & replaying voicemails, thinking of the way you called me sister woman or the way you’d say sweetheart or Divine! The light in your eyes was like a bolt of lightening straight into the hearts of everyone who knew you. At our last last lunch at the beach, you caught me staring at you and asked me ‘what? something on my face? I said no girl, I’m just falling in love with you again and we just cackled and hooted and hollered until the people at the table next to us shot us dirty looks and asked to be moved. Then you said ‘Oh eff ‘em if they can’t take a joke’ and we descended into waves of laughter until we cried. A lunch that started at 12 would last until the sun was setting. We never really talked about work - thanks to Peter and Herb it’s how we met but it’s not what made us friends; our kids, music and food, travel, your animals…A true night owl, I’d look forward to your texts after midnight, asking ‘you still up? Ready to play me a song or talk about the how the wind was howling. I love how you lived out your values and shared your point of view. Wise, humble, vulnerable, powerful & fiercely loyal and uncommonly kind. So calm and steady. I called you once from the hospital terrified I wasn’t going to survive blood clots you calmly told me to rest. When I said i was scared & can’t breathe, you said you’d breathe for both of us. You’ve been a source of so much inspiration, love & laughter in my life especially these last 10 years. Your first photos with Peter made you a star but I know that for you, your life really began the day Jonah was born & how much you loved being his mom. ♥️♥️ Rest easy sis, love you always and until xx

What an honor and a thrill to be included in this dream project with my model Sisters who inspire me and cheer me on. Thank you to my daughters @ellabella914@zoragrams and #littlemissAudreyrose for encouraging me to say yes to this opportunity. You give me courage. I am because you are. xxK
PS this is my first and only photo with my natural hair. For the 37 years of my career, I was always told to come to work “with straight hair”. And, If you’ve been following along here you’ll know that my ongoing treatment for #Dermatomyositis has meant continual hair loss( while preserving my ability to swallow and walk) so I’m celebrating having my curls n coils back even if only temporarily. #grateful

“I don’t remember where I first heard this quote, but remember being profoundly moved by it. Because no matter your beliefs, we have a limited time on this planet, and while we are here, we take a journey TOGETHER- filled with joy, pain and all the emotions in between.
The past few days we’ve paused and said prayers for our collective souls, and for healing for the people of Haiti and Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world. The concept of the ‘collective’ vs. one of ‘self’ is one that will probably define this period in our lifetime. As we continue to sit in this global public health crisis, hopefully we’ll ruminate on that concept and have it eventually inspire us to make our way out of it. Hey, one can only dream.
The organizations below are some we have found that can make a direct and timely impact on those suffering right now. No act of kindness is too small. Even it’s it’s just one dollar- to the woman or child on the receiving end it makes a world of difference. We encourage you to donate, should you have the means.
Take care of yourselves, and each other.” ♥️

Wowee. @amandascgorman has won our hearts with her powerful words. I think this is perfect timing, as our nation is hungering for words of wisdom and divinity. I can hear the power of her and her ancestors sing through her. As a young woman who has overcome her own speech impediments through writing and reciting her own poetry, she has now grown into such a strong and earth-moving orator. She is living proof that pressure makes diamonds.
Just two days ago Amanda Gorman and I released a video collaboration in honor of National Day of Racial Healing, which you can swipe to watch. Her poetry adds such a depth of dimension to my song “Somebody’s Beloved,” and I am so happy our paths have crossed in the name of making art, and not keeping quiet.
I adore you, Amanda. Cheers to many more years of being guided and comforted by your words and wisdom. I have a feeling we will be hearing from you for the rest of time. Soak in the beauty. It is a reflection of you and the ancestors who ride alongside you.

Grandma's hands
Clapped in church on Sunday morning
Grandma's hands
Played a tambourine so well
Grandma's hands
Used to issue out a warning
She'd say, "Billy don't you run so fast
Might fall on a piece of glass
"Might be snakes there in that grass"
Grandma's hands
Grandma's hands
Soothed a local unwed mother
Grandma's hands
Used to ache sometimes and swell
Grandma's hands
Used to lift her face and tell her
She'd say "Baby, Grandma understands
That you really love that man
Put yourself in Jesus hands"
Grandma's hands
Grandma's hands
Used to hand me piece of candy
Grandma's hands
Picked me up each time I fell
Grandma's hands
Boy, they really came in handy
She'd say, "Matty don' you whip that boy
What you want to spank him for?
He didn't drop no apple core"
But I don't have Grandma anymore
If I get to Heaven I'll look for

“We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
We are still not satisfied.
57 years later, the work for justice continues. The pursuit of righteousness goes on.

There’s healing for your sorrow,
Healing for your pain
Healing for your spirit,
There is shelter from the rain
So Lord, send a healing, for this we know
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the soul ~
