Born in Prague, Zuzana Riha immigrated to Revelstoke, British Columbia with her family as a child. After attending Emily Carr University of Art + Design Riha decided city life was not for her, and she returned to BC to work as a back country park ranger and for ski patrol, making art in her spare time. According to Riha “Working for Parks, I have learned that connection to nature is crucial to our species survival, and I try to incorporate that concept into my art.”
Working with discarded materials, Riha connects her artwork to nature, and more specifically, wildlife. Rider, Tread, and Knobby were created using recycled bike tires, chains, and kitchen utensils to build each sculpture. The artist reflects the fierce beauty and freedom of the wilderness while encouraging awareness around interdependent ecosystems, environmental responsibility, and the wildlife inhabiting these landscapes.
