"In his first game since being overlooked for the Maroons squad for Game Two – when coach Billy Slater described him as "not quite 100 per cent at the moment" – Cobbo carried the ball for 137 metres, broke nine tackles and made two line breaks in the Broncos' 32-16 loss to the Warriors on Saturday night. The 22-year-old flyer told NRL.com that he will be ready to go if Slater wants him for the all-or-nothing contest in Brisbane, after watching on from home as the Blues levelled the series last Wednesday with a dominant victory. "I am pretty keen to play the decider if Billy picks me again, but I will just have to wait for that call," he said. "Nobody needs to know about [what happened before Game Two]. I'm all good now and hopefully I get that call." "I'll get through it [physically]." Cobbo added while it was likely that he'll require pain-killing injections in order to play the remainder of the NRL season, it won't be a hindrance to his performances on the field. "I'm pretty sore after a physical game, but all good... it's something I will have to do for the rest of the year," he said. "We've got good physios here [at the Broncos] who will keep treating it and hopefully at some point it will get better. It's just a few niggles." With Maroons winger Xavier Coates breaking down with a hamstring injury in Round 17 and now unlikely to be available for the Origin decider, Cobbo shapes as a leading contender to fill the void in the backline, having previously played four games on the flank for his state. He's also an option to reassume the 'super sub' utility role he played in Game One, with his versatility on full display once again against the Warriors when he finished the games as a middle forward in a Broncos side scrambling to cover for the in-game loss of Jack Gosiewski (arm) and Fletcher Baker (knee). Brisbane coach Kevin Walters commended Cobbo's performance post-match and said the week without Origin or club commitments had been a blessing for him. "He's a player Selwyn, we know that. The rest from Origin as such has been good for him," Walters said. "I thought [against the Warriors] he was in our top two or three players." - Corey Rosser

"Kevin Walters believes Selwyn Cobbo is proof of the need to freshen up State of Origin players and has declared him primed for a Queensland recall. Cobbo is the standout alternative to replace winger Xavier Coates in the July 17 State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium after the Melbourne flyer injured his hamstring on Saturday. Coates will be out for around six weeks and Cobbo provided the perfect audition for his spot with a 150m running game, including some heavy duty work in the middle of the field as a de facto forward, in the Broncos loss to the Warriors on Saturday. While form is the major consideration, there is the additional issue of coach Billy Slater having to decide whether Cobbo is ready to face the furnace of a hugely pressurised contest after missing the second match of the series due to the toll of playing with injections and the need to work on unspecified parts of his game. Broncos coach Walters has no doubts Cobbo is ready for the immense mental and physical challenges of an Origin decider. “I think he’d be at the forefront of Billy’s mind, that’s for sure. He had another strong game for us,’’ Walters said at the Brisbane International Airport on return from New Zealand. “So it just goes to show the toll that Origin takes on young players. He was a different player for us last night so it was good to see.’’ Asked whether Cobbo would be up to the challenge of returning to Origin, Walters said: “Yeah, definitely. He got some time away from the game. He went back to Cherbourg and his family. That’s normally very invigorating for players, particularly Selwyn with time with his family. “That’s all he needed. Just a bit of a break. I’m sure if he’s called upon he’d love to play for Queensland, but we’ve got next week against the Panthers and he’s got to get his mind around that short turnaround for us.’’ Walters was criticised by some former players for resting his Origin stars Reece Walsh, Pat Carrigan and Payne Haas for the Warriors game but has no reservations about the move." - Robert Craddock
