Today marks 60 years since the final whistle was blown on the Sons of Gwalia mine!
The final whistle blew on this day in 1963, signalling the end of the final shift at the Sons of Gwalia Mine and the final days of an entire community. Extra trains were arranged to manage the exodus of people leaving their homes and belongings in the race to find new jobs. Gwalia’s population dropped from 1,200 to 40 in less than three weeks!
