This painting inspired by 2 black and white vintage photos and a shot I took at the #PlaceOfRefuge on the Big Island of Hawaii. A beautiful wahine watches a wooden schooner drop anchor in an idyllic tropical lagoon with a majestic volcanic mountains in the distance. The 2 menacing tikis watch over her and could portent troubled waters ahead for the visiting sailors.

A pair of Sea Turtles (“Honu” in Hawaiian) enjoy a cocktail or 2 in their classic tiki bar. One Honu enjoys a jellyfish cocktail while he strums his ukulele, while the other shakes up a fresh tropical libation. Their bar features all a dream collection of fishing float, tapa cloth and puffer fish lamps, a “kanaloa” tiki, a giant clamshell fountain, tiki mugs, a swordfish bill, traditional Hawaiian weapons, jade tile panels and even Mai Kai pole barstools!

Deep under the tropical sea, a gorgeous green-haired mermaid poses alluringly on a bed of coral next to a Kanaloa-style tiki, the Hawaiian ocean spirit. His menacing teeth echo those of the sharks that swim in silent vigil.
