In memory of, my friend, Will. Truly, one of the greatest men I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. Will was incredibly intelligent, successful, an unbelievable physique, handsome, yet somehow at the same time so thoughtful, caring and humble. Me and Will went for a dog walk recently, he brought me a load of t-shirts he thought I’d like, and spent the whole time telling me how incredible everything I’m doing is. He was genuinely so happy at mine and the whole team’s success, and that to me perfectly describes the kind of man Will was. A genuine friend, with the best heart. I have too many memories and examples of how much joy Will brought to mine and @jasminjuliajeffery ’s life, and how he will continue to impact me for the rest of mine. This has taught me just how strong of an impact on others living a considered and virtuous life has. To say that lipolytic drugs like clenbuterol are just the ‘icing on the cake’, is not true. Clenbuterol has a powerful effect on fat loss, with this study in humans demonstrating a huge 21% increase in resting energy expenditure and a 39% increase in fat oxidation from a single dose of 80mcg. The ‘interference effect’ is a concept suggesting that if you perform concurrent resistance and aerobic training, that your adaptations to each will be reduced as compared to training only one of them alone. I’m certainly not here to suggest that this doesn’t exist, but that the research suggests that it’s not something that physique athletes should be overly concerned with, taking into account the most ‘common’ cardio practises in this cohort. One meta-analysis from 2021 found: ‘Concurrent aerobic and strength training does not compromise muscle hypertrophy and maximal strength development. However, explosive strength gains may be attenuated, especially when aerobic and strength training are performed in the same session. These results appeared to be independent of the type of aerobic training, frequency of concurrent training, training status, and age.’ [PMID: 34757594] When you dig through the individual studies on the interference effect, you tend to find that if you perform long duration, high intensity aerobic work, especially within close proximity of resistance training sessions, a reduction in hypertrophy adaptations begins to happen in a dose-response manner. Don’t trade out your aerobic work, that can be extremely useful for health, enjoyment (for my BJJ friends) and QOL benefits purely for the fear of not maximising your gains. Keep it as far away from your resistance training sessions as possible, don’t perform excessive amounts at a super high intensity, and you’re fine. Specific recommendations are tricky, but if you’re finding your additional cardio is impacting your ability to progressively overload at the same rate you were able to prior to adding it in, and you’re nailing everything else that you’re supposed to to support massing, then consider the risk:reward of reducing it down a touch. Surely the top contender for the Dog Training Classic win, @craigogilviedogs . 13 weeks of deficit, not including a 4 week period where Craig was away on holiday and didn’t track a single thing, yet came back exactly the same weight and body composition as he left. I only coach a very small handful of lifestyle/gen pop clients these days, but I still love it with guys like Craig. Doghouse doorway > Kuwait magic mirror. @brad_physiquecollective has hit the condition where we can begin to get specific regarding our show timeline. Prep thus far has been pretty wacky. Being in 5-6 week out condition now running 5 days of 4k calories + 2 days of 5k calories, zero cardio, and training each body part with 3 sets/session twice per week.
