Two Union soldiers who took part in one of the U.S. military's first special operations 162 years ago were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by Pres. Biden on Wednesday. Descendants of Pvt. George Wilson and Pvt. Philip Shadrach were on hand to accept the nation's highest military honor for "gallantry and intrepidity" in defense of the Union. Union soldiers — acting as spies in civilian clothing — managed to penetrate 200 miles into Confederate territory, where they commandeered a train and drove it 87 miles from Georgia to Tennessee. In what became known as "The Great Locomotive Chase" on April 12, 1862, the Union raiders destroyed Confederate railroad tracks and telegraph lines. Nineteen of the men involved were awarded Medals of Honor, becoming the first group of Army soldiers to receive it. But, because of what historians attribute to an oversight, Wilson and Shadrach never received the award posthumously. Learn more at the link in bio.

She shared a heartfelt "I love you" to her daughters and ended her video with a clip of herself reading from her memoir: "We are creatures who crave certainty — but life, it turns out, is a study in uncertainty."
