@manin32 and I started The Barba NYC in 2013 as an experiment. What two Dominican immigrants from The Bronx are capable of doing when they dream, collaborate, and share ideas with one another? From cold days knocking on retailer doors, getting rejected in our faces, walking up and down NYC pitching our beard oils we were putting together in the basement of our parents’ home, to having one of the country’s biggest retailers [UO] carrying our products in bulk.

In 2016, I moved to Austin looking for a change of pace and a new adventure. The idea was to open a small retail space for grooming care and 1 barber chair to enhance the experience. When writing the plan, 1 chair became 2, it became 3, it became 4, and at that point, I became committed to taking the risk and opening The Barbashop in honor of the history Julian and I went through in those cold winter days getting rejected and almost ruining our friendship.
I spent 3 years of my life saving every single $, learning everything I could about the barber industry, business, marketing, team building, and how to differentiate myself from the noise. I had to stop enjoying my life simply because I needed this idea to happen!

In 2019, every single barber I wanted to work with refused to start with me because I wasn’t a barber.
@queerfriendlybarber was the only barber that gave me the trust to prove myself and show them that I can change the industry and build a business that will change their life.
In 2024, we celebrate our journey, our success, our clients, and every single barber that has come through our door. Thank you to every single client who has sat down and received a great haircut, great conversation, and a great experience with the team at The Barbashop.
