When was your last time hearing your own voice? My first time doing #RoundRobin . Watching my fellow artists improvise was mesmerizing, but stepping into that circle was a leap into the unknown. So, as I got inside the circle, I closed my eyes for a moment. Observing the tone like a surfer watching the waves and then letting my voice ride 🌊🏄🏻‍♀️ Sometimes she felt playful and released some textured character, sometimes playing with hometown tonal, sometimes even hitting some range I haven’t heard so often.  It was liberating to hear my own voice doing what it could do. It’s not every day I get to voice out tonalities and textures that were unexpected, unwelcomed, and haven’t been given a chance to exist for no reason.  Funny enough, after that session ended, I asked myself, “Am I still a vocalist? We learn from collaborations and connections, but most of my profound lessons are found in the losses. Our 1st day at @1beatmusic 13 began with a brief introduction of ourselves followed by a group challenge to make music without musical instruments. I was grouped with @aranchiataaa @katecampbellstrauss @chabobobobobo @magda.reda.58 . I felt like I wasn’t my best at the time, but I learned the importance of actively listening and always going for simplicity. There are many occasions where time is a luxury we can’t afford, making it crucial for musicians and artists to just vibe. We continued with a #sonicmeditation by Pauline Oliveros, #teachyourselftofly . This helped me move past what happened earlier; it deserves a reel of its own, which I’ll share later. After “coming back” to the barn, we explored the farm and visited the lake. My uncles shared countless memories in Ximending (西門町) area during their college years in Taiwan. They got real excited taking me here. This area has been always the center of entertainment, fashion and (of course) Taiwan’s pop-culture. Back in the past they even nicknamed it as Shibuya or Times Square of Taipei. It’s where the youth gather and mingle during weekends. It’s also known for its inclusive and diverse atmosphere as it has been a focal point for Taiwan’s LGBT movement.
