DIZZEE RASCAL - STRINGS HOE - 2003
Another one of Dizzee’s early productions, for me his stand out production. The grittiness of the tune really sums up where the scene was at at that point in time. The bounciness of the violin really brings energy to the beat and is on of the first examples of the “string” style of Grime production, sampling different string instruments do add that bouncy quick energy.
That iconic string sample is violin, sampled from the 1985 song ‘Car Florida’, By John Lurie. Produced in the Belly of the Beast studio that was owned by Dizzee’s, at the time, manager and engineer, Nick Cage. Almost all of Dizzee’s production from this era where produced in this studio, it is unclear if the sample came from Dizzee directly or it was already in Cage’s library, but either way it helped push a new sound within the scene.
This riddim has remained a classic for the two decades since its creation, getting a bootleg pressing back in ’04, which was pressed from a rip of a dubplate, meaning every version of this has that slight crackle at the beginning. The beat was repressed recently on the 20th anniversary of ‘Boy In Da Corner’, but as far as I’m aware that is a rip of the rip as the original files are unfortunately long gone.
Despite all it iconic moments nothing will ever come close to that clip of D Double E, taken from the Conflict DVD where Crazy T & Dizzee are clashing. Arguably one of the most iconic clips in Grime.
