We spent four days with the Finnish Army Helicopter Battalion at Utti in Eastern Finland. The principle platform of the battalion is the NH90, which is used to support special operations forces and army units with air mobility. London has to be one of the most amazing backdrops, but it comes with a lot of difficulties when flying in formation, and then throw in areas of restricted airspace. So it’s a huge team effort to make shots like this come off — it’s also a little bit of a gamble as it’s at ATCs discretion on the day. For example, we had to hold north of Canary Wharf for around 7 minutes before we could enter the Heli lanes. This was taken as we flew west along the River Thames, looking out towards the Shard and Tower Bridge. One of the first full features I shot for @verticalmag was covering the 56th Rescue Squadron before their move to Aviano. Since then I’ve always been fascinated by the CSAR mission. So it was an absolute privilege to have the opportunity to visit the CSAR CTF at Nellis AFB. Providing invaluable insights into the future of CSAR, including the testing of the HH-60W and the integration of Guardian Angel and Isolated Personnel divisions.
