The Morels have landed in Dorset! 🍄🥳 Exactly 7 days after the milder temps along with a deluge of the damp stuff and my mushy senses were tingling, especially while driving past a new build estate 🕵️‍♂️ I purposefully headed to the South facing side of the estate, knowing that this would be the most likely area to find a few early fruits, basking against a warm wall or nestled in a sunny corner. Just as I got round the corner, there were the first 2 tucked up next to a curb... followed by another 2! The seriously spectacular, Hericium coralloides! ❤🍄 All these fruiting bodies are erupting from the same Beech trunk, this thing is the OG, it's a 1 of 1 in our books 🙏🥺 There's a few records for this on @inaturalistorg but they're all the same record at this particular location. According to the older members of our fungus group, this is also the only fruit they know of in Dorset, over 25 years of 🍄 spotting. Fast forward several weeks and the fruits going over now and quite a large section was harvested earlier in the season, but with our strange autumn, the trunk fruited again! The new and improved jar lids, made a huge difference..enabling me to make up batches of 20 of each species in just under 15minutes a strain..zero faff and not a single needle wasted and a fraction of the time 🙏 It feels good to get these all buttoned up.. A huge amount of time and effort has gone into these liquid cultures. From their initial transfer, then another transfer, then into the liquid broth, nurturing everyday, stiring and checking for zero signs of contam. Shout out to @onlyginjaninja for spotting this whopper of a wild mushroom, in Dorset. This is Cerioporous squamosus, or more commonly a Dryad's Saddle. We received the tip off and had to go take a look! It was unfortunately too far gone for us to get a viable sample, there were more fungal gnats and maggots than mushroom flesh, on the inside! 😅 Fortunately they regularly fruit again in the same location, every year, until the nutrients are depleted. Given how large this Ash tree was, this mushroom should be appearing for many seasons to come. They have a wonderful fresh cucumber, some say almost water melon smell to them and when fried and a little crispy, they're 🤌 With genetics like this, we'll definitely be back here again, to catch a younger fruiting body 🍄❤️ #dryadssaddle #wildmushrooms #dorset #jurassiccoastmushrooms #cerioporous #culture #ash
