National Costume Miss Supranational Malaysia 2024 “Kumang - The Mother Goddess of the Iban People”
Kumang, the revered Mother Goddess of the Iban people, is celebrated for her unparalleled beauty and extraordinary weaving skills. Her essence is honored annually during the Pekit Kumang, a beauty pageant that highlights traditional attire and virtues associated with her.
In Iban culture, colors carry profound significance. Red symbolizes blood, life, and vitality, and is often used in rituals to represent the life force and divine power. Yellow, representing the sun, light, and warmth, is associated with Sengalang Burong, the god of war and healing. Gold signifies wealth, prosperity, and good fortune, while white denotes purity, innocence, and cleanliness.
The buriek on Kumang’s dress refers to traditional Iban attire adorned with cowrie shells, a unique and captivating element of Iban culture that showcases their heritage.
The gong in her hands is a vibrant expression of Iban heritage, played during significant community events. It marks the rhythms of joy, celebration, and solemn reflection, serving as a cultural compass that guides the Iban people through life’s various stages.
