As we come to the end of Pride Month, we want to pay tribute to a member of our community who made way for a more inclusive world in ballet and beyond. A legend, a light, a trailblazer—✨Leopold Allen✨, ABT’s first resident Hair and Makeup Supervisor, was a fixture in the Company for over 10 years, working closely with many ABT icons including Susan Jaffe, Alessandra Ferri, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. An artist of the highest caliber, Leopold always filled the room with laughter and made everyone in his chair feel ready to take the stage. In 1989, Leopold sadly lost his life to AIDS. This summer season, ABT is paying homage to Leopold @MetOpera with a special exhibit. Check out the two exhibit cases in the Richard Tucker Case in the North TV Lounge and the Chevron Texaco Gallery in the South TV Lounge. 📷: Paul B. He came to ABT II (what we called the Studio Company in the 80s) and taught us how to do our makeup. We were kids and nobodies. He made us feel like stars. I still have the powder brush he recommended.

A wonderful and generous human being who touched me and my fellow dancer friends. He opened up his pointe shoe warehouse — letting us try on pointe shoes “rejected” by ABT dancers — and if we found a good fit, he’d sell them to us for an amazing $10 a pair — it was a lifeline for us as young professionals — i wore shoes made for Christine Elliot and still keep a pair or two. So glad ABT is honoring his service and the values he stood for♥️
