Every summer since 1983, mermaid-obsessives from New York and around the world have flocked to the Coney Island boardwalk for a 200,000+ person-strong parade. This year, grown ups and kids dressed as merfolk, sharks and sailors – among other aquatic sealife – all came together to stage a Mardi Gras-level display. Over the years, the shapeshifting nature of merfolk has been embraced as a symbol for LGBT+ folk and particularly the trans community. As one person in the parade told photographer @juliandufour : “There’s beauty in the absolute queerness that gets expressed today”. . . . Photos @juliandufour #coneyisland #photography
