On June 28, 1981, a meeting was held to discuss creating a Gay Men’s Chorus in Washington, DC. Marsha Pearson, a straight ally to DC’s gay community, had been so deeply moved by a performance of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus that she felt DC should have a similar organization. Pearson and 18 gay men met to gauge interest in starting a chorus; enthusiasm was so strong that the meeting morphed on the spot into GMCW’s first official rehearsal. Within 3 months, the Chorus had grown to 80 members and gave its first public performance. Happy Birthday, GMCW!
