The second verse (*excluding beginning, it’s 1st Verse) of the Hanuman Chalisa reads as follows: बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार। बल बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥ Transliteration: Buddhihīna tanu jānike, sumirauṃ Pavanakumāra। Bala buddhi bidyā dehu mohiṃ, harahu kalesa bikāra॥ Translation: “Knowing my body to be devoid of intelligence, I meditate upon you, O Son of the Wind. Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my sorrows and defects.” Description: In this verse, Tulsidas expresses humility and acknowledges his limitations. He describes himself as “buddhihīna,” which means lacking in wisdom or intelligence. By doing so, he emphasizes the need for divine intervention and assistance in overcoming his deficiencies. He then addresses Hanuman as “Pavanakumāra,” which means the Son of the Wind (Pavana). This epithet highlights Hanuman’s divine parentage and his association with immense strength and swiftness, characteristics derived from his father, the Wind God. Tulsidas beseeches Hanuman to bestow upon him three essential qualities: strength (bala), wisdom (buddhi), and knowledge (vidyā). These attributes are crucial for overcoming the challenges and obstacles in life. The final part of the verse, “harahu kalesa bikāra,” is a plea for the removal of sorrows (kalesa) and impurities or defects (bikāra). Tulsidas is seeking Hanuman’s grace to cleanse his mind and life from suffering and negative tendencies. This verse underscores the themes of humility, devotion, and the aspirant’s reliance on divine grace to attain strength, wisdom, and purity. It highlights Hanuman’s role as a powerful deity capable of alleviating the devotee’s suffering and guiding them toward spiritual growth and enlightenment.
