Three Dollar Bill recognizes Juneteeth as an important date in Black History. We also acknowledge that we are white settlers on Turtle Island. In highlighting Black history on this day, we also want to acknowledge the role of Queer Black activists, whose courage and continued efforts shape the world as we know it.
Black LGBTQIA2S+ history is complex, rich, and traumatic. It’s the harsh reality of not only our colonial dark past, but the current state of the world.
As Audre Lorde wrote “caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare;” As a community we know that the struggles to end racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia are inextricably intertwined.
Black history and Black Queer history have shaped nearly every aspect of our culture as we know it today. Let’s not forget who threw the first brick! Happy Juneteeth and let’s take care of one another and ourselves. Your existence is political!
