Psychologists Dr. Kenneth Clark, along with his wife Dr. Mamie Clark, are Howard alums. Dr. Kenneth Clark is also alum of the City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s largest urban public university where I teach, and Dr. Maimie Clark is also an alum of Columbia University. The Clarks are the architects of the groundbreaking “doll test”, showing the destructive effect of racism that was the cornerstone to the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v Board of Education that ruled racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional, even if the segregated schools are otherwise equal in quality.
