Happy Birthday to my first love Hip-Hop!
@hiphop50 I was blessed or shall I say chosen to be the one of the first to display your glory Off-Broadway in a play filled with Hip-Hop music that I wrote at 13 years of age entitled Hey, Little Walter, which starred Harold Perrineau, Seth Gilliam, Merlin Santana, Sean Nelson, Natalia Harris and Cynthia Martel. Hey, Little Walter was first performed at Playwright Horizons in 1990 and then went on to be published in numerous publications and later performed all over the world. Not long after that production did I team up with
@renolysantiago to write the book to the musical Bring In the Morning with starred Lauryn Hill and was the Apollo Theater’s first theatrical musical performance. Most of the songs performed in the show were hip-hop.
From Rapper’s Delight onwards… Hip-Hop you continue to inspire and inform me as a writer. You gave my generation a voice that reverberated to every corner of the world. I can’t wait until you completely take over Broadway! Let’s go! Happy 50th Birthday Hip-Hop!
