Devil’s Club Tempura by @chefshota . This recipe is inspired by how these young spring shoots are commonly cooked up in Japan #ハリブキ #wildfoodlove #oplopanaxhorridus #oplopanaxjaponicus Young devil’s club shoots have a unique flavor often described as being slightly bitter and peppery, somewhat akin to celery with a touch of ginseng-like bitterness. In terms of texture, the shoots are tender yet crunchy, similar to asparagus or young bamboo shoots. Its unique taste and crisp texture make it perfect for tempura. These shoots can also be added to salads and stir-fries or eaten on their own as a vegetable side. #wildfood #foragedfood #devilsclub #springshoots #springforaging #pnwforaging #pnwforest #forestfood #forestfloor #pacificnorthwestisbest #pnwchef #wildplants #oplopanax #springfood #tempura #wildvegetable #japanesefoodlover #japaneseinspired #針蕗
This has me thinking about making some tempura fried thistle stems. What a great idea.

To anyone who sees this PLEASE do not go out harvesting devils club! It's deeply sacred to many cultures and even though it's all over the pnw it isn't a wide spread plant. Please please please research this one heavily. I'm an herbalist I work with alot of plants this is my thing but I swore off ever harvesting devils club out of respect for this plant and cultures who use it.

Weird thing to say, but thank you for not mentioning the medicinal use of an herb?! That’s extremely responsible of you. When people want to use these styles of medicine, I feel there is a much higher need for the individual to engage with the different texts describing the herbs use, therefore ensuring their understanding of not only the proper usage but also the ways of harvesting that won’t effect future populations of said herb. More people need to think before they post about an herbs potential (emphasis on potential!!) benefit.
