Nestled in a home basement in Atlanta is the ultimate hidden gem: @Mondo_Video . Mondo is a classic ’80s-era video store boasting more than 14,000 VHS titles in its current inventory. Owner and creator Anthony Sant’Anselmo started the project after moving to Atlanta four years ago. The magic is in the details, instantly transporting “customers” (Anthony’s friends and neighbors) back in time — no DeLorean required. Even the name is nostalgic, a throwback to the fictional video store in the TV series “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.” Take a look inside Mondo Video, and remember: Be Kind, Rewind. 🎥 by: @andrew__hetherington #AARP #GenX #MondoVideo #VideoStore #Blockbuster #80sNostalgia #The80s #Nostalgia #BeKindRewind

“Many people find fishing a calming and meditative activity providing a break from the stresses of daily life.” When Chad Ferguson, 50, takes his clients out on the boat to fish, he knows it’s about more than just the catch of the day. “I often find myself in the role of giving advice or just being there to listen,” Chad says. “I know that people are out there with me, trying to find peace in their lives.” Chad is the founder and owner of North Texas Catfish Guide Service, a business that started in the late 1990’s when Chad was taking friends on out to fish on his days off from being a paramedic. Now, he’s a full-time business owner, using his passion and family history with fishing to help others have a meaningful experience out on the water. “I have lots of parents bringing kids because they want to find ways to get them outside and away from devices,” Chad says. “It also teaches patience, discipline, and an appreciation for wildlife and conservation efforts. Patience and discipline are huge these days. We live in an instant gratification world and some younger generations don’t have much patience.” Chad even uses fishing to connect with his own kids – 17 and 24 – the same way that he would fish with his father and grandfather growing up. “I’ve raised them both on a boat,” Chad says. “When I can tell something is ‘off’ with them and they need fatherly advice or guidance or just someone to listen, I get them in the boat. We’ve worked through a lot of problems on my boats over the years and had a lot of serious discussions about life and life choices.” (2/2) 📸 by: @trevorpaulhus #AARP #GenX #Fishing #Texas #FishingGuide #SecondCareer

“The biggest thing about being a good guide is you have to be a people person,” says Chad Ferguson. “I like people. I find people from all walks of life fascinating.” Chad, 50, is the founder and owner of North Texas Catfish Guide Service (@catchcatfish ). Some of his earliest memories are of fishing as a kid on Possum Kingdom Lake with his father and grandfather. After 10 years as a paramedic, Chad left the profession to turn his passion for fishing into a full-time career. “Being a paramedic is tough,” Chad says. “It’s emotionally draining to see the things you see every day. It takes a toll on you mentally and physically. My first child had just been born and I had a series of events happen on the job over several months that let me know it was time to get out and do something else.” While he’d been taking friends and acquaintances out fishing for years, it had always been a side gig but after he left his job as a paramedic, he transformed the part-time hobby into his life’s work. “I didn’t officially start the business until 1997,” Chad says. “There was a lot of fly by the seat of my pants early on. The internet was young then also and things were a lot more difficult. I upgraded my boat to a newer, slightly larger boat and was fortunate enough to get a ton of media exposure in fishing magazines early on, so that was a huge help.” Now, Chad has clients ranging from plumbers and construction workers to famous musicians, football stars and retirees. “When I get on the boat with people, they just start talking and telling me their life stories,” Chad says. “Often, they relax, and it turns to problems in their lives, whether it be marital or just general life problems. I always make sure the people who fish with me catch plenty of fish and have a good time, but I learned early in my career that a lot of the people that end up fishing with me are there not because of the fish, but because of something else in their life and they’re looking for some peace.” (1/2) 📸 by: @trevorpaulhus #AARP #GenX #Fishing #Texas #FishingGuide #SecondCareer

“Social isolation is a hot topic among senior services providers”, says Sandy Fisher, 58. “Our department’s biggest impact has been to provide opportunities for older Novi residents to connect with others through our social programming.” Sandy is the social services coordinator for Novi’s Older Adults Services division in Novi, Michigan where the percentage of older adults rose from 17.9 percent to 21.3 percent between 2017 to 2022. She works with Older Adult Services Manager, Kit Kiser, 45 and Madison Lachance, 30, the Recreation Supervisor. Programs available to residents include knitting circles, chair-volleyball, tai-chi, yoga, Zumba, and Mah Jong. In addition to fostering personal connections, the division also works to meet health and physical needs by offering free blood pressure screenings, fitness and health-well-being classes, and food assistance programs. “Our services profoundly impact older adults”, Kit says. “Participants often express feeling healthier, both physically and mentally, and appreciate the social interaction our programs provide.” (2/2) 📸 by: @emilyiriselconin #AARP #GenX #IntergenerationalWorkplace #Millennials #ParksandRec #Michigan

In the town of Novi, Michigan the percentage of older adults rose from 17.9 percent to 21.3 percent between 2017 to 2022. In the wake of the uptick, the Older Adults Services division, a branch of the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services department in Novi, works to bridge gaps in services and accessibility. Older Adult Services Manager, Kit Kiser, 45, works diligently with her team to serve Novi’s growing population of older adults. “I wear many hats”, Kit says. “Whether it's crafting strategy or coordinating with my team, there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes." With the help of Sandy Fisher, 58, Social Services Coordinator, and Madison Lachance, 30, the Recreation Supervisor, the team works to coordinate, schedule and communicate directly with local residents. Together they help facilitate exercise and stretching classes, social hours and food distribution services among others. Like many cities, the Older Adults Services division operates out of the local Activity Center, in lieu of a designated Senior Center. "Working on an intergenerational team brings diverse perspectives that enrich our programs," Kit says. "I've found that the mutual learning and respect among different generations create an inclusive and innovative environment. This collaboration not only builds strong community connections but also ensures we deliver high-quality services to our older adult population, making my work incredibly rewarding."
