“The biggest thing about being a good guide is you have to be a people person,” says Chad Ferguson. “I like people. I find people from all walks of life fascinating.”
Chad, 50, is the founder and owner of North Texas Catfish Guide Service (
@catchcatfish ). Some of his earliest memories are of fishing as a kid on Possum Kingdom Lake with his father and grandfather.
After 10 years as a paramedic, Chad left the profession to turn his passion for fishing into a full-time career.
“Being a paramedic is tough,” Chad says. “It’s emotionally draining to see the things you see every day. It takes a toll on you mentally and physically. My first child had just been born and I had a series of events happen on the job over several months that let me know it was time to get out and do something else.”
While he’d been taking friends and acquaintances out fishing for years, it had always been a side gig but after he left his job as a paramedic, he transformed the part-time hobby into his life’s work.
“I didn’t officially start the business until 1997,” Chad says. “There was a lot of fly by the seat of my pants early on. The internet was young then also and things were a lot more difficult. I upgraded my boat to a newer, slightly larger boat and was fortunate enough to get a ton of media exposure in fishing magazines early on, so that was a huge help.”
Now, Chad has clients ranging from plumbers and construction workers to famous musicians, football stars and retirees.
“When I get on the boat with people, they just start talking and telling me their life stories,” Chad says. “Often, they relax, and it turns to problems in their lives, whether it be marital or just general life problems. I always make sure the people who fish with me catch plenty of fish and have a good time, but I learned early in my career that a lot of the people that end up fishing with me are there not because of the fish, but because of something else in their life and they’re looking for some peace.” (1/2) 📸 by:
