Precious metal markets sold off sharply this week, with the price of gold and silver down 2% and 5% respectively in USD terms. The weakness in the market has been driven a range of factors, with sentiment taking a big hit when it was revealed late last week that China had not made any gold purchases in May, bringing to a halt an 18 month straight period where they had been adding to their holdings. Precious metal markets continue to probe new highs this week, with gold trading near USD $2,400 per troy ounce (oz), while silver rallied well beyond USD $30oz earlier this week, before pulling back as the week draws to a close. So topical has gold become, that it generated a lot of attention at the Morningstar Conference held at the ICC in Darling Harbour Sydney this week. Precious metal price rose sharply this week, with silver rallying by 8% in USD terms, while gold was +3%. The move higher was also seen in Australia, though it was slightly more subdued, owing to a 1% increase in the value of the Australian dollar, with the AUD gold and AUD silver price currently sitting at $3,567oz and $43oz respectively. The rally in precious metals was replicated across risk assets as well, with equities, cryptocurrencies and commodities all rallying, as did the bond market, with longer-term US treasuries up by 2% for the week. Gold and silver prices remained on the backfoot this week, with the price of the two precious metals falling by 1% (gold) and 3% (silver) in USD terms.
