I’ve never been good at goodbyes.
Fourteen years ago, Zorg, you chose me.
I made a promise to you early on to be there, to care for you, to be forever friends. We stayed alongside each other throughout all these years. I write this wishing we had infinite time. You saw me through a formative time in my life, an unwavering steadfast friend. For so many years, waking up with you at the foot of my bed, or you greeting me when I came home from work, was a given. You were my constant in an unpredictable life. I never took that for granted, but without you a chapter of my life is closing.
You made a house feel like a home. Your distinctive chatter could pull me out of the toughest places in my head. Always willing to sleep the day away with me when I needed it, or supervise household projects, your presence helped me cultivate kindness, curiosity, and patience. I learned all of this through your unconditional love and consistent company.
A splinter of my soul, my familiar, my beloved, Zorg. I’ll miss you until I’m gone too.
To many of you who have known me, Zorg was also a familiar face. He easily made an impression with his substantial size, unusual smoke coat, and talkative nature. Zorg passed recently of an aggressive cancer caused by old age. His decline took only a matter of months. He lived a good life. He steps before you and I into the inevitable that awaits us all.
I felt it was necessary share this. Take care and never hesitate to tell those you love that you feel that way.
