Butterflies not only symbolize transformation but also rebirth and new beginnings. Just like the dawn of a new day.
The everchanging metamorphosis of these fascinating beings with its freedom-finding finale is paralleled by the daily routine of office clerk “Eric Walter”.
Like him, the insect in the cocoon is a prisoner of its determinism, impatiently waiting to break free and overcome it's limitations.
But especially in case of the nocturnal moth this post-hatching freedom, much like the end of the protagonist's workday, is immediately disturbed by anthropogenic light sources (lamps, televisions, screens) of the night. Paired with the disorientation of both beings, this instinctive dependences becomes fatal, even leading to a drastic decline of population in case of the insect.
