Current Ailey Artist-in-Residence Maria Bauman is deepening movement practices across AILEY. ✨   A Bessie Award-winning multidisciplinary artist and community organizer, Bauman’s work embodies all the tenets of AILEY, using dance to promote social equity while connecting us to our deeply embodied roots.   Last Fall, Bauman worked with students at @TheAileySchool , teaching classes and developing new ideas through the New Directions Choreography Lab as pictured above.   This month on July 12, Bauman continues her engagement at AILEY with a one-of-a-kind workshop with @AileyExtension that will combine movement and community-building practices for all levels of dancers. Today is Katherine Dunham’s birthday. Dunham is one of the most significant choreographers in modern dance history, the director of the Katherine Dunham Dance Company—the first Black-led dance company in the United States—and a dance anthropologist. Dunham was an outspoken activist for civil rights and used her platform to draw audiences’ attention to the country’s ongoing policies of racial discrimination. She sued multiple hotels for refusing her lodging because of the color of her skin, winning her cases and inspiring street protests in her support. In 1967, Dunham was charged with disorderly conduct for challenging police when one of her dancers was wrongfully arrested. She also routinely called out the theaters in which she performed for segregating audiences and refusing Black patrons. In celebration of Dunham’s birthday, we honor Dunham’s fighting spirit and the light she shed—through her art and activism—on the need for justice and equality for Black Americans.
