Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the day in 1865 when US soldiers occupied the seceded state of Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Though it is often considered a celebration of the end of chattel slavery in the United States, slavery would not be formally abolished until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December of that same year. Also known as “Freedom Day,” “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” or “Emancipation Day,” there is a unique flag from Galveston, Texas. The flag uses red, white, and blue as a reminder that those enslaved and their ancestors were and are Americans. A curved arc across the width represents a new horizon of opportunities and promise. A white star signifies both the state of Texas and the freedom of African Americans in all 50 states. The star is outlined by a burst, which is inspired by the “new star” nova, representing a new beginning for African Americans. The flag also explicitly includes the date. #juneteenth
