Pakistan has been a supporter for many Afghan refugee families for decades. I am saddened they would so abruptly push back refugees who face the impossible realities of trying to survive in today’s Afghanistan, where women have again been deprived of all rights and the possibility of education, many are being imprisoned, and there is a deep humanitarian crisis.
It is yet another example of the backsliding in human rights globally, and is a new tragedy in the long history of the suffering of Afghan people - who have experienced nothing but war and conflict and displacement for over forty years, and are being abandoned by the world after all the promises that were made of a better future for the Afghan people.

This is the deliberate bombing of a trapped population who have nowhere to flee. Gaza has been an open-air prison for nearly two decades and is fast becoming a mass grave. 40% of those killed are innocent children. Whole families are being murdered. While the world watches and with the active support of many governments, millions of Palestinian civilians - children, women, families - are being collectively punished and dehumanized, all while being deprived food, medicine and humanitarian aid against international law. By refusing to demand a humanitarian ceasefire and blocking the UN Security Council from imposing one on both parties, world leaders are complicit in these crimes.
In 2005, Abdulrazak Gurnah published “Desertion,” an epic novel about how the legacy of colonialism affected generations of African and British families in Zanzibar. Just a handful of years later, Gurnah became the first African writer in more than a decade to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. On the occasion of the republication of “Desertion” and two other landmark works (“Afterlives” and “By the Sea”) I spoke to him about why the movement of refugees and migrants from the global south to the global north today cannot be separated from the injustice of colonialism.

To claim your rights, you have to know what they are. Article 42 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child requires governments to ensure that children and parents are aware of the principles and rights enshrined in the convention. Pleased that our book on youth rights is now also being published in Albania, Kosovo, Poland, Romania and Moldova, and sending my respect to all the young activists defending child rights in the region and using their right to a voice.

Last year I shared with you “Piqui’s Law,” a brave effort by my friend Ana Estevez – whose five-year-old son, Piqui, was murdered – to pass a law in California to help keep children safe from family violence. The bill is coming before the California State Assembly for its final vote. If passed, new training will ensure that judges and authorities don’t ignore the signs of abuse that cause harm and even death to many children in our country. I’m sending Ana my love.

Fighting in Sudan has displaced more than 3,000,000 people. Among them are South Sudanese refugees who fled earlier violence in their own country, and who are now displaced again, back into South Sudan where for many, home still isn’t safe for them. This is the reality for millions of refugees in the absence of peace agreements and stability in their countries - displacement upon displacement.
