Mycelium is intelligent and adaptive, varying its morphology to suit different needs. Our structural blocks are designed at @anomalia.in and expertly engineered at @roha_bio . Here, we’re testing the compressive strength of the block with a simple load test. The block weighs 0.8kg and can easily sustain a load of 60-75kgs and more. From initially growing mycelium samples at home to now cultivating them in labs, our collaboration is focused on merging design and technology. Returning to Citrus Concrete 🍊 This project serves as a constant reminder to approach tasks consciously, focusing on essential aspects with minimal interventions. The office space, spanning approximately 3000 sq ft, was completed within a 90-day timeframe. Our first homegrown module samples. Prototyping and an iterative feedback process as crucial for effective design solutions. Therefore, when we encountered challenges in demoulding our samples from the single-piece mould, we promptly reevaluated the mould design, revising it to a four-part mould that opens up, facilitiating effprtless module release and enhancing reusability across multiple cycles. ◀️▶️ We experiment with various geometries and moulds to accelerate the growth of mycelium, and our approach involves a trial-and-error process. We’re exploring various methods, from vacuum forming to 3D printing. The crucial aspect was designing a geometry that introduces flexibility to the overall mould. Increasing the number of sides enhances flexibility, hence, we transitioned from a square to a hexagon shape. Incorporating transparency helps monitor growth while experimenting with different thicknesses during printing.
