Inspirited. Hand Crafted butterflies in vellum paper. “We weave what We see in nature” Yanet Salazar, Kumeyaay Artist. Art Installation by Ariel Vargassal. Part of Willow Woman art exhibition. Kumeyaay People create their beautiful weaving art from nature, they honored the humble materials with masterful precision and patience. As an artist I decided to make this installation with the same philosophy: the most humble material for me as an artist is paper, it is the beginning of creating, and putting my ideas into visuals for people to see Who I am. So I used paper and patience to create this art installation. But it wouldn’t be possible without the inspiration of the Kumeyaay weavings, the unconditional trust of @marisacaichiolo @buildingbridges_ax to keep believing in me as artist and let me fly, with my ideas. @stevenmasonlife for the support, love and encouragement. Thanks to the dedication of @__katie2 and my fellow artist @chrisritter16 , your passion for the project, your patience, and attention to detail is unparalleled. I’m very thankful to keep creating. #art #arte #monarch #butterfly #butterflies #kumeyaay #weaving #artinstallation #artist #contemporary art #latinx #artecontemporaneo #native #indegenous #mexico #artistamexicano #artcollector #museum #museo #losangeles #artist #fly #livingmybestlife #dreaming #

Willow Women Film and art exhibition on viewing @buildingbridges_ax “The voices of the #Kumeyaay tribe. A community that lives to honor and respect the earth to take only what is needed, fight to protect it & honor it. It was an honor & great blessings to be in the presence of these incredible confident & strong women. Whose hearts remain open with unconditional love despite the challenges and injustices they face. This exhibit is not only a display of their beautiful work but the power of love. The love these women hold for their community empowers them to work hard to keep their traditions alive for future generations and share it with the world “ @liz_de_god #artexhibition #art #arte #kumeyaaydefenseagainstthewall #kumeyaay #kumiais #nativeamerican #native #nativepeople #indigenous #indigenousart #love #women #firstpeople #fineart #santamonica #bergamontstation #artgallery #artcollector #artcritic

Willow women. June 16th A project inspired by the Kumeyaay connection with land and nature through weaving. By “Two cardinal points art collective” The “Sawil” a utilitarian weaving basket, ignited with its beauty a search for the people behind its creation. The encounter with the creators was beyond any expectation, we were allowed to enter their world of craftsmanship, these women with their agile hands showed us an ancestral tradition. Then there was a welcoming into their community, showing us a world rich in history and philosophy of life. These master weavers of juncus and willow, are aware of the importance of nature and the deep connection between land and mankind, with a sensitivity that in many ways transcends current culture.  Representation matters in the world and the Arts are fundamental for the connection and impetus for social changes, Kumeyaay people want visibility, and we need changes. “Willow Woman” is inspired to create an exhibition that mirrors the captivating way in which they see the world, and their lives through weaving.  Their history is told through their eyes, and words, We the Artcollective became the channel to portray its saga. Kumeyaay people and their communities are intricate, and the wisdom is almost untouched by Western culture. So, it was important for the collective to use a diverse range of art expressions to bring the viewer into their world, by incorporating elements traditional to Kumeyaay Culture as they were represented in the past and present, using juxtaposition of current materials.  We in our togetherness are able to create visual metaphors, giving a glimpse into what wonderful Culture this is.  Hopefully the “Sawiles” in this exciting exhibit ignites something within you, the same curiosity that it did to us, to know the people behind the weaving. TWO CARDINAL POINTS, Ariel Vargassal, Steven Mason. is is a multifaceted arts collective dedicated to the production and exhibition of unique works. We are committed to support diverse cultural backgrounds, and support their talent. #documentary #documental #arte #art #artinstallation #native #nativeamerican #kumeyaay

Womanist. Acrylic on canvas, and plexiglass. 70 x 36 in. Inspired by Xochiquetzal , the goddess of love, beauty, flowers, and fertility, and the protector of young women.  Is now part of Altamed Art Collection, one of the largest Chicanx/Latinx Art Collections in the World. Very grateful to cm2 and Susana Smith Bautista, Chief curator of the AltaMed Art Collection for their support.      Xochiquetzal was the Aztec goddess of fertility, sexuality, and traditional female handicrafts such as weaving. She was also heavily associated with the moon and the various lunar phases, always represented by a young woman. The representation of the goddess includes flowers and butterflies Xōchiquetzal’s name is also quite interesting. It actually comes from two Nahuatl words: Quetzalli, which means a bird with splendid feathers, and Xóchitl, which means flowers. Another name for this beautiful goddess was Ichpochtli, which means “young girl” or “maiden.” Xōchiquetzal was a goddess that certainly knew how to enjoy herself, and she wanted to share all the pleasures with humans. As a goddess of love, she was the patron not only of romantic love but also the patron of sexual love and sexual relations. As such, she protected lovers, prostitutes, and adulterers without judging or punishing them for their sins in any way. Additionally, Xōchiquetzal was known for being eager to forgive sins. It can be said that Xōchiquetzal was one of the first icons of sexual liberation.    If Xochiquetzal would be in today’s context, she would be a feminist.  #art #arte #artecontemporaneo #feminism #feminist #figurativeart #fineart #artcollector #artcollection #museum #xochiquetzal #modernart #contemporaryart

Womanist and Flowing. Paintings inspired by Brother and sister, Xochiquetzal and Xochipilli. Altamed Art Collection. In the past, there were different social norms, and with colonialism, those ‘norms’ were pushed aside....largely influenced by the ideology and religious beliefs of the times. For me, it’s important to explore early indigenous cultures, who had the awareness to embrace the diversity in mankind, with a sensitivity that in many ways transcends current culture. I was inspired....to create artwork that mirrors the evolving changes in our current society, by re-imaging those deities as if they are living today, by incorporating elements as they were represented in the past, and the juxtaposition of current materials with a futuristic design. #art #arte #figurativeart #artecontemporaneo #contemporaryart #aztec #aztecdeities #diosesaztecas #arielvargassal #butterflies #feminism #queer #artcollector #artemexicano #artecontemporáneo #dioses #gods #butterflies
