The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread light, moderate, to heavy rainfall in Assam and other Northeast states over the next five days, starting July 1.
According to an IMD statement, a cyclonic circulation is present over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and another over northeast Assam at lower tropospheric levels.
Due to these conditions, the IMD predicts:
- Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning, along with heavy to very heavy rainfall, across Northeast India over the next five days.
- Isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh on July 1, 4, and 5; in Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim on July 1; and in Assam and Meghalaya on July 1 and 2.
In response to these forecasts, a red alert has been issued in Assam for July 1, indicating the need for disaster management agencies to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against possible severe weather impacts. An orange alert has also been issued from July 2 to July 5, advising locals to be prepared for heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning.
