@712.sy_ ‘The Ghetto Renaissance' is a project portraying Black Culture or 'Ghetto' culture in its truest form of authenticity; The Hood'. The beauty of Black Culture is that it is one of the most influential Cultures in the world. From the clothes, the jewelry style, the way we wear our hair, and even down to the way that we speak. It is imitated everywhere. But every day that our culture is mimicked, we are gaslit and undermined by the very world that mimics it. 'Ghetto' was always a derogatory term to insult our culture. Now people want to wear it like a badge of honor. So we have decided to take it back and show just how much beauty is in that word. The project features a play on the classical style of the Renaissance era, with the use of Bodice, Underskirts, and Gigot sleeves. The project was shot in a place with a predominantly Black and Brown population, in Jersey City, NJ.
