When they opened the gates, a wall of very loyal and excited fans appeared at the far end of the main stage area, a line of ‘our T Shirts formed, charging in force, to be the first at the ‘Barrier”.. it was like a scene from ‘Braveheart’. THROWBACK THURSDAY Today we found a very cool 90's Voodoo Queens record bag hidden in the archive... The Voodoo Queens, a North London-based indie punk/riot grrrl band, topped the UK Indie Chart in 1993. Formed by Anjali Bhatia in 1992 after leaving Mambo Taxi, the band included her sister Rajni, cousin Anjula, and members Sunny and Ella Guru. Signed to Too Pure Records, they released their only album, "Chocolate Revenge," in 1994, though it did not include their 1993 hit "Kenuwee Head." Collaborating with Andy Stennett, Rocca reworked leftover ideas, including a Freeez track called "India." Named after Rocca's record label, Pink Rhythm produced three singles from 1984 to 1985, notably the cult favourite "Melodies of Love," celebrated as "timeless drum-machine soul music." Rocca's music has been widely sampled by artists like Jamie xx, Empress Of, Brandy, and Burial. As a brit-funk pioneer, his work has appeared in TV shows, movies, and fashion campaigns for brands like Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton. "Melodies of Love," featured in films such as "Beau is Afraid" and "Blue Jean," and in a high-end ad campaign for Piaget. The "AN 80S LOVE AFFAIR" LP includes six classic Pink Rhythm tracks, four of which haven't been on vinyl since 1985. Originally produced at Miraval Studios in France and mixed in Rooster Studios, London, the tracks were remastered in 2024 by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road. John Peel first saw Bauhaus perform in their hometown of Harpole, Northampton, at a John Peel Roadshow event in June 1979. During their early years, Peel frequently played many of their songs.
