It's EARTH DAY! We wanted to talk about vinyl and sustainability. What is the problem and what is Beggars doing about it?
🌍Our physical products, mainly vinyl, contribute 63% of our global carbon footprint, with vinyl manufacturing and shipping being major contributors due to vinyl's weight. To achieve our 50% carbon reduction goal by 2030, transitioning to sustainable vinyl is crucial.
🌍Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) is the traditional material for records and has significant known environmental impacts due to it’s reliance on fossil fuel , however, plant based alternatives marketed as ‘biovinyl’ face challenges such as limited recycling options and potential upstream impacts. Despite advancements, biovinyl's sustainability is still evolving alongside other technologies that use different types of plastic.
🌍A full life cycle analysis approach is the only way to compare physical format options as well as making comparisons with digital formats- which also have significant energy consumption. Records, being cherished and reused items, should not be considered as a single use plastic. However we should make careful consideration of end-of-life disposal and recycling possibilities when looking at alternative technologies.
🌍Recycling efforts for PVC focus on pre-consumer waste, with initiatives like reusing manufacturing offcuts as reground feedstock into new records being available. We work with our suppliers such as Optimal to ensure that they use these sustainable manufacturing practices as well as industry leading energy management and efficiency techniques like reusing heat from manufacturing processes and within the factory. We are also working on bringing unsold items back into the factory to use as a reground material for new records. Our shift to sea freight further supports sustainability by addressing the impacts of distributing our products around the globe. By holistically assessing the lifecycle impacts, we aim to transition vinyl to a low-carbon format for the future. #earthday#vinyl#sustainability
