Vinyl records continue to grow in popularity, with vinyl sales up 14.2% across all U.S. independent retailers in 2023. This rise in demand highlights the importance of addressing the #sustainability of #vinyl production. The Vinyl Record Manufacturer’s Association (VRMA) and the Vinyl Alliance (VA) have released their inaugural report, analyzing the carbon footprint of vinyl record manufacturing and offering recommendations to mitigate it. 📄🌍 Key Findings: • The carbon footprint of a single vinyl record is approximately 1.15 kg CO2e, equivalent to driving a car for three miles. • 50% of emissions come from the PVC compound. • 30% of emissions are due to energy consumption at factories. • 13% of emissions are from printed packaging. 5 Recommendations to Reduce Carbon Footprint: 1. Eliminate air freight. Shipping records by air significantly increases the carbon footprint. 2. Switch to “bio-attributed” PVC. This material, made from waste products and plant-based materials, can reduce an album’s carbon footprint by 44%. 3. Press records at 140 grams. Heavier records increase the carbon footprint by 14-26%. 4. Simplify packaging. Using standard packaging instead of more complex designs can reduce the carbon footprint by 10-15%. 5. Transition to zero-carbon energy. Replacing gas boilers with electric or hydrogen boilers is challenging but necessary to reduce the carbon footprint.
