One year ago today, @serafin_castro_dancer underwent reconstruction of his ACL. People describe Serafin as “superhuman”, as his physical capabilities seem to be endless. An ACL reconstruction can take down the mightiest of the mighty, the strongest of the strong. It’s a serious procedure that takes nearly a year to fully recover from. And it’s not an injury that professional ballet dancers typically deal with. There are numerous ACLR rehab “protocols” that provide therapists with a step-by-step, week-by-week guide on how to progress. Unfortunately, this doesn’t exist for ballet dancers, or really, dancers of any kind. This process took a deep understanding of ballet mechanics and technique, as well as patience, humility, and persistence for everyone involved—Serafin, his therapists, his family. There were many times that Serafin struggled to stay positive throughout his recovery, and was often questioning if he would ever be able to dance at a professional level again. Some of our sessions focused more on getting his head straight than his knee straight. But he came out of it, happy, healthy, and well on his way to dancing stronger than before. Dancers, your body is your everything. Trust it with people who know, people who listen, people who get it. #builtforballet #dancerehab #balletrehab #physicaltherapyfordancers #aclrecovery #aclreconstruction #persistence #dancestronger #kneerehab #ballet #balletaz #proud

Just have to take a moment to recognize my current PT student @kaitlyn_johnson1 Kaitlyn is finishing up her Doctoral program at @universityofjamestown in Fargo, ND, after growing up dancing and teaching at Red River Dance & Performing Company @redriverdance Our clinic is a unique place, with a fast-paced environment and wide variety of patients. It is definitely a challenge to find your footing here, but Kaitlyn has demonstrated a level of persistence that I haven’t witnessed before! She began feeling overwhelmed, underprepared, and worried that she wouldn’t be able to catch up, but she has grown into a confident & proficient therapist, and has truly become part of our little family! Kaitlyn’s best attribute is her ability to connect with patients. As a student, this can be extremely difficult, particularly when working with such a high population of dancers that generally prefer to see a seasoned therapist. Kaitlyn’s previous experience teaching and dancing have definitely been an asset to her, but it is her kind, caring heart that has really helped her to connect with both dancers in general population patients alike. This is a gift that you cannot teach. I look forward to watching her growth, and hopefully continuing to be a part of it!!! If you’re interested in dance rehabilitation and have an upcoming rotation, DM me so we can connect! Let’s keep expanding our worldwide team of healthcare professionals who are passionate about improving the care of dancers of all ages and styles. #dancemedicine #physicaltherapyfordancers #dancerehab #ptstudent #apta #dancertodpt #builtforballet #teachingthenextgeneration #kindnessheals

No injury? No problem! Let’s work together to improve your dancing! Did you know that you don’t need a doctor’s prescription or even an injury to come work with me? Physical therapy is a great place to “fine-tune” the areas of your technique that might need a little extra attention. Examples include: •Turnout •Pointe work •Petite allegro (batterie/beats) •Flexibility •Extensions •Speed/articulation with footwork Our cash pay program allows you to bypass insurance (which requires that we establish medical necessity) and allows us to work on anything you think might be missing from your dance technique! As a dance teacher and coach of over 20 years, I love incorporating my passion for refining and building dancers into the work I now do as a Physical Therapist! Call @foothillsnorthcentral at 602-241-3145 to set up an evaluation with me! #builtforballet #dancerehabspecialist #physicaltherapyfordance #ballet #turnout #pointe #strengthisbeauty #dancersareathletes #balletcoach #dancestrongerdancelonger #balletbody

It’s been a busy year for me, but I can’t imagine a better way to bust back into social media than to give a shoutout to Brenna Slawson @brenna.mslaw for completing her Honors Thesis Defense on Dance Injury and Prevention at ASU Barrett Honors College @barretthonors Brenna is one of many dancers I’ve had the joy of working with over the years who has turned her passion for performing into a new passion for providing specialty healthcare for dancers. She plans to attend medical school & become a sports medicine physician with a focus in dance medicine. So proud of you for reaching this huge milestone & looking forward to working alongside you in the future as we continue to improve healthcare for the dance community!

SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF. Every exercise & treatment are specific to the patient and their issue or complaint, chosen carefully based on years in the dance world combined with several more of medical education. BUT, it doesn’t mean anything if it’s not helping. There’s no room for any ego in this process. Rehab is as much about communication & feedback as it is about you listening to your therapist & learning from them. If a therapist chooses an exercise or treatment & it doesn’t feel good or you don’t know why you’re doing it, ASK. Your body & learning about how it works is YOUR responsibility. Understanding & explaining why it’s not working correctly is mine. Fixing the problem is a responsibility that we share TOGETHER. *Sound quality of video was poor, so it was taken out.* #builtforballet #injurypreventionfordancers #rehabfordancers #posteriorankleinpingement #injurypreventionfordancers #balletinjuries #healthydancerslastlonger #balletbody #demipointe #halluxrigidus #manualtherapy #mobilizationwithmovement

SO YOU THINK YOU’RE NOT CHEATING YOUR TURNOUT BECAUSE YOUR ARCHES ARE LIFTED? THINK AGAIN. Compensated (cheated) turnout is most obvious when you see the feet “rolling in”. But, highly skilled dancers like the one in this video have found a way to cheat that as well! By pushing her big toe into the floor, this dancer is able to lever her arch upward, correcting the visual appearance of rolling in. However, when the big toe was taken out of the picture by moving her foot over the edge of the disc, her ability to lift her arch became immediately impaired. This means that while she was correcting the arch collapse WITHIN THE FOOT, it was not correcting the collapse in the ankle. The result? Shin splints for over 1 year. The torsion (twisting) that occurs in the tibia (your shin bone) is one of the biggest causes of shin splints—not just in dancers, but in all athletes. It’s a sneaky—and very skilled—cheat, but careful examination of her mechanics in plié, relevé, & sautés revealed that this did not correct the deficit between how much turnout she was able to produce—and control—at her hips vs. her feet. It just hid it really well. And it should be noted that continued use of this cheat is likely to lead to FHL tendinitis… Cheaters never win, & winners never cheat 😘 Video 1: “Correcting” arch collapse by using muscles that flex the toes to lever the arch up. Video 2: Arch collapse correction dependent on anterior & posterior tibialis. These muscles are clearly not strong enough to perform this action fully controlled, so every time she pliés or lands from a jump/relevé, they can’t control the torsion through the tibia. #builtforballet #rehabfordancers #balletinjuryprevention #shinsplints #ankleinjuryprevention #turnout #compensatedturnout #balletpt #turnoutmechanics #archcollapse #healthydancerslastlonger #dancersareathletes #dancestrongerlonger #balleteducation #anatomyforballetdancers #knowyourbody #balletbody #physicaltherapyforballetdancers #dancept

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE CHEATING YOUR TURNOUT? We all know that the key indicator of whether or not you’re cheating your turnout is if your knees go directly over your 2nd toes in a demi-plié. But at what point in the demi-plié are we actually looking at it? This is an important question, both for dancers & teachers. Especially considering how many dancers complain of knee pain with pliés! Something we ALL need to know is that the prime ligament that limits turnout in the hip is the iliofemoral ligament (or Y ligament). Fun fact: it is the strongest ligament in the entire body! However, this ligament LOOSENS when the hip is in flexion—when you’re either bent over forward or when you lift your leg to the front or side. So, as you drop into a deeper plié & the hip flexes more, it gets easier to turnout. This is why most of us can turnout much easier in a grande plié than in a demi. But what about in the first moments of a plié when the knee is just barely moving from full extension to the tiniest bit of flexion? THIS is the moment when we can really see if you’re cheating your turnout. Because at that moment, the Y ligament is still pretty tight, so the turnout you’re displaying is your TRUE, AVAILABLE turnout. The first 2 videos show a dancer forcing her turnout. You can see that at the depth of her demi-plié that her knees are right over her foot, but when she is asked to perform a very slight plié, her knees are far in front her foot. The second 2 videos show the same pliés, but with the dancer in the amount of turnout that she has available at her hip joints. You can see how even at the very beginning of her plié, the knees stay exactly in line with the foot. Give it a try. And teachers, check this out on your students before you tell them to turnout their feet more. #builtforballet #strengthtrainingfordancers #balletinjuryprevention #danceinjuryprevention #turnout #firstposition #balleteducation #anatomyforballetdancers #knowyourbody #balletanatomy #rehabforballetdancers #balletpt #balletteacher #balletteachereducation #physicaltherapyfordancers #healthydancerslastlonger
