this is one of the most emotional illustrations I've had the honor of creating.
It is a story about how fungi represent the renewal of life, breaking down decaying components in soil, producing edible fruiting bodies (mushrooms) --some of which represent sacred symbols to Indigenous cultures. While also showing up on key times of the year, transitioning the world from one season to another. A promise of death, renovation and new life.
There's such a great variety of mushrooms that aren't found on supermarkets. They can be harvested directly from the Earth, such a powerful gesture full of meaning, if you ask me!
For the Indigenous Foodways section in @yesmagazine_ thank you for trusting me and my work once again!
I encourage you to go read this beautifully written article on their online page♥️🍄
And you ask me,
how do I know?
I can't answer, right now. Because I'm right here making this.
Because my hands can't shut up about it.

This idea came to me a while ago. I was falling asleep when a vision of vines, convolvulus and ivy sprouting from a lover's arms came full on in my head. The analogy of flourishing and getting entangled with one another, the clinging.
It was supposed to be a watercolor from the beginning, too. Also, the added layer of how artists love, intensely and longingly and the only way we know how: by making art.
Today seemed appropriate to post the final piece!🌿♥️ #february14th
Gracias Red Observadores!
