Edit _ would like acknowledge that safety riders , safe spaces is not a new thing nor something I should get any kudos for . Queer community has always had this in place just to survive and we have not been listening enough and it's time we stand up and all shout . I don't want to see one of my friends on cover of RA for the wrong reasons one day.
Today I wanted to talk about safety riders. It’s something i’ve wanted to talk about for some time and following another unfortunate incident at the weekend, now feels like a good time to bring it up.
In this business I often find myself travelling for many hours on minimal sleep on my own, and having a safety rider offers me some protection.
To other DJs out there, get in touch if you’d like to talk about including a safety rider in your rider. To promoters please look after your DJs, and if its a matter of cost lets re-discuss fees. I know letting artists arrange their own ground transport is cost effective, but you can’t put a price on safety.
Today I've been speaking to many DJs about their experiences with various app-based taxi services and I've heard some really awful stories - thank god they are still alive to tell them. We are not the problem or being divas, we just want to feel safe. We can't change the behaviour of these men, lord I've screamed and shouted my whole life but nothing changes. I'm open to all thoughts on how we can tackle this together in our community.
