Let’s talk substance when it comes to these films here’s my breakdown on our film “Outside”
1. Cycle of ViolenceThe ending reinforces the theme of the cyclical nature of violence. Despite the characters’ attempts to assert control and seek revenge, they remain trapped in an unending loop of retribution and conflict. The final confrontation serves as a stark reminder that violence only begets more violence, leading to more loss and grief.
2. Loss and Grief Harley’s journey, which began with the loss of her friend Ivy, comes full circle as she faces more death and destruction. The ending underscores the persistent presence of grief and how it shapes the characters’ lives and decisions.
3. Search for Identity Throughout the script, characters struggle with their identities within the gang culture. The ending highlights the ultimate cost of these struggles, as the characters’ choices lead to irreversible consequences. It questions whether true identity and purpose can be found within such a destructive environment.
4. Desperation and Hope:The characters’ actions are driven by a desperate need for validation, belonging, and survival. The ending reflects the bleak reality of their situation but also leaves a glimmer of hope that breaking the cycle is possible, even if it remains out of reach for some.
Underlying Messages
Consequences of Choices: The ending illustrates that every action has a consequence. The characters’ decisions, fueled by anger and a need for revenge, lead to tragic outcomes. It serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of making conscious, deliberate choices.
Impact of Environment: The harsh realities of the characters’ environment play a crucial role in shaping their fates. The script emphasizes how external factors, such as socio-economic conditions and community dynamics, influence behavior and opportunities.
Possibility of Change: Despite the tragic ending, the script suggests that change is possible. It hints at the potential for characters to break free from the cycle of violence, though it acknowledges the immense challenges they face in doing so.

#repost@ssjronniek some insight into one our most allegorical and imaginative films “OUTSIDE”
“Audience members asked me to explain this so, I will. The film is not a surface level film, there are signs and symbolism directly in your face throughout the film. The dead losing color is one of them, color theory and film is a thing. A reference to “The Dead” by James Joyce which deals with literal and metaphorical death. “Fading into a grey impalpable world.”
