A very early @ko piece. Karen wore this onstage at @sxsw and ended up on the cover of I think the @austinchronicle the next morning. I remember coming down to the hotel lobby and finding a stack of the papers and feeling totally blown away. This was I think 2003. @yeahyeahyeahs Thank you @annaannasusu for the snap!

This is how I make the Rockaway Beach tees and most of my printed work. I cut out stencils with a craft knife and then use screen printing methods to apply the ink. I taught myself to screen print around 2006 during the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album cycle for Show Your Bones. I was looking for another way to keep Karen’s looks one of a kind and decided that print was a good way to go. I love the graphic line of a print and the collage of color and symbols.

I know poetry isn’t everyone’s jam. I don’t even read it that often but I love writing it and I’m trying to figure out ways to incorporate it into my work. My mom read my siblings and I nursery rhymes when I was a kid and they’ve definitely had a deep effect on my work.
Poetic Pigeon! I tried to write a haiku but I don’t know if I did it right. 🐦Pigeon with feathers a ruffle peck for specks of lunches leftover. 🥪Maybe it’s more of a limerick.
I’ve been playing and replaying this interview of Georgia O’Keefe talking about painting what you see and I was thinking about that when I made this piece. I was flipping through the book Cabinet of Natural Curiosities looking for some inspiration and came across this drawing of the stone in the center. I like everything super graphic so I had to try to figure out how to cut it out of paper so create a stencil. I like the way it turned out. I added the kind of trumpet shapes in because I thought it made the piece look more like some sort of flowering shrub. I’ll post the Georgia O’Keefe interview in my stories.
