It’s #NationalDonutDay 🍩, and that brings back sweet memories of our exhibit “Keep Your Eye Upon the Donut,” which was curated by donut expert @juliejthomson and ran from 12/2013 to 2/2014. The exhibit explored the history of donut shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan and the role NYC played in popularizing this delicious treat, starting with Anna Joralemon’s 1673 donut shop on Broadway near Maiden Lane. Other exhibition highlights included the founding of the first donut shop chain, Mayflower Doughnuts, which had its flagship in Times Square. The A train got an A-plus on May 31, as Queerly Femmetastic, representing the triboro subway route, was crowned the winner of the annual Miss Subways pageant. Once a beauty contest sponsored by advertising agencies, the revamped Miss Subways returned in 2017 with a twist. No longer is Miss Subways an old-school beauty pageant — instead, it’s an opportunity for Brooklynites of all ages and genders to prove that they’re the best representative for their respective subway line. Dressed in a glittering blue dress with an A train headpiece and a fluffy rainbow shawl, Queerly Femmetastic performed a new version of the jazz classic “Take the A Train.“ Her version of the song urged riders to take the train to Brooklyn, not Harlem. At the end of the night, Queerly Femmetastic was awarded the “transit tiara,” a glittering crown covered with the iconic subway line symbols and, of course, a pizza rat. A product of NYC Catholic schools, public school magnet programs, the bodegas of Bed-Stuy 🥯 and many lazy days on Riis Beach 🏖️, Queerly is a New Yorker through and through. 🗽 Queerly says the subway is the best way to experience our wild city.
